Located at the foot of Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak sits the beautiful town of Underhill. A small town of about 3000 people, it sits along the Route 15 corridor, just a short 20 minute drive to Essex. A true Vermont town with beautiful mountain views, scenic vistas, and peaks with views sweeping across Lake Champlain and to the Adirondacks in the distance.

Recreation

The Underhill State Park is located within the Mount Mansfield State Forest. Just over the summit ridge you’ll find Stowe Ski area. A popular hiking destination, you’ll find some unusual vegetation types along the mountain’s summit ridge. The low, stunted-plants found in the alpine tundra near the summit, very rare in New England are more typical types found in broad expanses or Artic tundra a thousand miles farther north. These plants are fragile. There are four trails to the summit ridge of Mt. Mansfield from Underhill State Park. Walking up the gated road from the park headquarters, the trails begin branching off shortly above the group camp area. The Sunset Ridge Trail, 3 miles to the summit, is the most popular. Vermont’s Long Trail traverses the summit ridge and, with several trails from the other side of the mountain, many loops are possible. Hiking information and trail maps are available at the park headquarters.

V.A.S.T is a non-profit private snowmobiling organization active for 40 years. It is responsible for the organization of the sport of snowmobiling, maintaining and grooming over 5,000 miles of trails. One of the oldest snowmobiling organizations in the U.S., VAST is a non-profit, private group that includes 127 clubs statewide, with over 24,000 members combined. The clubs and their steadfast volunteers, and the landowners that allow riders to cross their land are the backbone of the organization. You’re sure to find some great VAST trails in Underhill.

Local Happenings

An absolute must in the fall is the annual Old Fashioned Harvest Market. You’ll find timeless fun at reasonable prices. Lots of food, cider tent, lemonade stand, cookie factory and more! There are also over 100 vendors with everything from locally-made maple products to hand-blown glass items to antiques, you can find it all!

A true fan favorite you’ll not want to miss is Poorhouse Pies! It all started selling Pies out of a shed with a self-serve, self-pay way. The Covid pandemic brought floods of people from all over where the demand was so much that they took it to the next level. It is now housed in a larger shop and the demand keeps growing. You’ll have to taste for yourself!

The town has a variety of housing available. Many country properties, some located in the village close to town, others secluded in the mountains. If you are looking to be just a short drive to the hustle and bustle but still feel that Vermont community feel, Underhill may be the place for you.
